Assessment and grading

The final assessment is based on four elements:

  1. Examination in the Autumn curriculum
  2. Examination in the Spring curriculum
  3. A project period near the end of the course
  4. Your homework portfolio (each homework set plus theme exercises) $ $

Each of these four elements are given a grade - called a partial grade - on the 7-point grading scale (-3, 00, 02, 4, 7, 10, 12). The course is passed if you achieve at least 02 in each of these four partial grades. The final grade on your diploma will be their average, rounded to the nearest grade on the grading scale, so all four parts weigh equally.

Examinations and Weekly Tests

Eight Weekly Tests in the Autumn semester

During the final hour of every Short Day, except for week 1 and the weeks with theme exercises, a non-mandatory one-hour test called a Weekly Test will be given in class. There will thus be eight Weekly Tests during the Autumn semester. Each Weekly test will contain 10 questions in Möbius based on the syllabus of the week. If, within the given hour, you score at least 60 % you will be given 1 bonus point. If you do not pass the test during this hour, the Weekly Test will again open up from 18:00 later the same day and stay open until Wednesday at 18:00 for repeated attempts - if you within this time period score at least 60 %, you will be given 1/2 bonus point. On the Short Day of week 1 a trial Weekly Test will be given that won’t provide any bonus point but just allows the students to familiarise themselves with the system.

Your total amount of bonus points will be added as percentage points to your exam result for that semester (roughly speaking, if you have scored, say, 68 % at the final written exam but you have achieved, say, 5 bonus points during the semester, your exam grade will be computed based on a score of 73 %).

Note again that the Weekly Tests are not mandatory; their purpose is solely to encite our students to stay on track throughout the semester since we wish to avoid that students fall behind in this fast-paced course, which from experience can have grave consequences. NB: Bonus points are not part of re-exams and cannot be transfered to other semesters.

Final written exam in December

The written examination in December consists of two parts:

  1. Firstly, a one-hour test in elementary skills without any aids permitted, also not calculators or notes. The questions in the 1-hour test will be variants of questions from the Weekly Tests of the semester.
  2. Next, a 2-hour test with all by-DTU permitted aids available. In the 2-hour test the focus is in particular on the understanding of concepts and methods. Detailed rules will be uploaded to the homepage well in advance. Past exam sets from the 2-hour tests of previous study years can be found on the homepage for training.

Weekly Tests in the Spring semester The Weekly Tests and bonus point system of the Spring semester follow the principles of the Autumn semester. There will expectedly be in total seven Weekly Tests during the Spring semester.

Final written exam in May The written examination in May will be conducted in the same way and following the same rules as the written exam in December.

The project period by the end of the course

The theory that is taught in the course will in a final group project be applied on an engineering-relevant topic. The project will be done in groups of expectedly six students, each assigned as supervisor, that will deliver a final project report followed by (expectedly) a report defence, presentation and examination. The project period will last for about 3½ semester weeks with all usual teaching, lectures and exercise sessions cancelled and all the usual time dedicated for the project groups. A consolidated individual assessment will be given on the basis of the joint report and the oral performance. An external examiner will participate in the examination. Note that your other courses will continue unaffected, since this is an internal project period within our course.

Your homework portfolio

Seven sets of homework problems distributed with four sets in the Autumn semester and three sets in the Spring semester are given. A homework set consists of standard mathematical problems for Möbius answering and essay upload. Your homework portfolio consists of all seven sets of these as well as the adhering seven theme exercises. Your final homework portfolio will be given a (partial) grade, in which the theme exercises have a weight of 1/4. Homework solutions shall always, regardless of the amount of prior group work that possibly lies behind the solutions, be formulated by yourself - every digital hand-in at DTU will undergo automatic plagiarism checks. Contact your teacher in case of doubt about contents, format, hand-in location or due date and time. Your teacher will provide you with feedback on your essay hand-ins at the latest before the next essay is due for hand in. NB: Late hand-in is not accepted.

Illness

In case documented illness prevents you from participating in the oral project examination, an oral project reexamination will be scheduled in August. In case of illness/absence during the entire project period, a (partial) grade of -3 will be given for the project assignment, and the student will have to retake the course in its entirety.

In case documented illness prevents you from participating in the written examinations or parts hereof in December and May, you are offered a reexamination in the Summer as detailed below.

Reexaminations

If you have achieved a (partial) grade of at least 02 in each of the four course elements, then the course is passed, and there are no possibilities for improving the results by reexamination.

Reexaminations are offered for the individual elements of the course according to the following rules:

  • If the written exam in December is failed, a reexamination is offed in May/June.

  • If the written test in May is failed, a reexamination is offered in August.

  • If the homework is failed, a new delivery of the homework portfolio will take place in August, possibly followed by an oral defence.

  • If the project assignment is delivered (your name is on a report) but failed or if you do not show up for the oral project examination, an oral reexamination possibly with a new report delivery is offered in August.

  • If a student fails one reexamination, then all other reexamination offers are withdrawn and the course must be retaken in its entirety.

  • Advanced Engineering Mathematics 1 as a whole must be passed during the reexaminations in August at the latest. Otherwise the course must be retaken in its entirety.

  • If you retake the course and pass the written exam in December, then you may transfer a (partial) grade from a project period if you have passed the project assignment in an earlier attempt in the course.

Examination attempts

All test and partial grades within the first run in the course (the first year that you are taking the course) are included within your first examination attempt. This includes any reexamination in the Autumn syllabus conducted in May in the following semester of the course. The reexaminations in August count as your second examination attempt. If you do not pass one or more of the reexaminations in August, then you must retake the course in its entirety (as mentioned above). All tests and partial grades in this new run in the course are included in your third examination attempt. This also includes any reexamination in the Autumn syllabus conducted in May in the following semester of the course. If you have not passed all four tests after the Summer examination of this run in the course, then your third examination attempt is used up.
